The custody of women, a major issue for the women’s movement since the early 1980s, has assumed a new dimension with the increasing migration of single women to the urban areas since 2000. While the movement has raised critical questions about the role of the state as a protector in different custodial situations, the assumption of the role of the protector by varied institutions from hostel wardens to house owners has made it an urgent issue for vast sections of women.

This one day workshop on custody with a focus on short-stay homes, shelter homes and women’s hostels brought together activists, students and women’s organizations to reflect on the difference between shelter and care in custodial situations.
