Representatives of the Basic Income and Care for Transgender Persons project presented initial findings at the 23rd Congress of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN), held from 29–31 August at the University of Bath, UK, under the theme “Reclaiming the Future: Basic Income and Socio-Ecological Transformation.”

The project was presented in the ‘Pilots’ session, under the title Radical Care: Unconditional Basic Income and Care for Transgender Persons – Insights from a Pilot Project in Hyderabad.

The session included contributions from John Michael (BIEN Asia-Pacific Regional Hub Manager), Yamini Appikatla, and Aparna Rajesh – who highlighted the aspects of care inculcation in a Basic-Income project for marginalized transgender individuals. The session was notably enriched by the presence of Nanditha, a project participant, who shared her lived experience of receiving Basic Income and Care through the project, with an international audience of scholars and advocates.

This report narrates Nanditha’s personal experience as a participant of the project, and as a conference attendee.
